Greenbrook

“Small enough to know you, large enough to get things done.”

So goes the motto of the charming Green Brook Township, located in Somerset County. Stretching just 4.6 square miles across with a population of about 7,200, Green Brook is nestled in the Raritan Valley, just south of the townships of Warren and Watchung.

Green Brook was previously known as North Plainfield Township, from portions of Warren Township. Sections of original Green Brook territory have been taken to form the present iterations of Warren TownshipWatchung borough, and North Plainfield borough. Interestingly, most parts of Green Brook shares the same ZIP code (08812) with neighboring Dunellen borough, located in Middlesex County.

Green Brook gets its name from the powerful stream that flows from the Watchung Mountains several miles away. The green-watered brook feeds smaller brooks and ponds and eventually into the Bound Brook and the Raritan River 15 miles south.

Economy

Small businesses dominate the local Green Brook economy. However, the township attracts professionals from the big city as well, thanks to its relaxing neighborhood settings and proximity to the New York metropolitan area. Green Brook is only an hour’s drive away from New York and 30 minutes from Newark via the I-78. Commuters have convenient access to the NJ Transit bus line via the 822 route and rail service via nearby Dunellen.

Schools

The Green Brook School District serves pre-kindergarten to eighth grade public school students, with an impressive 17.6:1 student-teacher ratio.

Green Brook is home to two schools: the Blue Ribbon-awarded Irene E. Feldkirchner Elementary School and the Green Brook Middle School. High school-level students attend the Watchung Hills Regional High School located in the nearby Warren Township.

Real estate

While Green Brook is relatively modest in size and population, it boasts a wide range of home styles and neighborhoods that cater to different tastes.

High-end homes primarily consist of custom-built Colonials and Contemporary-styled houses set against gorgeous backdrops of mountainside land. One of the most upscale listings boasts a design inspired by an esteemed 17th century red brick England estate.

Green Brook also offers a selection of townhouses and custom detached single-family homes.
